SUMMARY:Elaine Romero’s El Tiradito World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Myth\, border crossings\, and activism converge on the site that is El Tiradito in this multi-layered\nimmersive play that looks at the interwoven stories of a place; or an idea of a place that has held\nsignificance for our community since its founding in 1871. As new migrants still wander a perilous desert\nto attempt to come to the U.S.\, Elaine Romero’s play explores years of activism at the Wishing Shrine\,\nand captures the longing and love inspired by El Tiradito.  Whether it be in service of an impossible\ncause\, a cry to activism\, or the simple retelling of how El Tiradito might have been founded\, this shrine\nholds a place for all of us.  Come.  Engage.  Renew your faith on unconsecrated and sacred earth. \n  \nThis immersive play will be presented at \nEl Tiradito Wishing Shrine  •  418 S. Main Ave\, Tucson\, AZ 85701 \nSeptember 14th Preview\, 15th Opening\, 16th\,& 17th at 7:30 pm \n& September 21st-24rd at 7:30pm \nReservations and Information: coalicion@derechohumanosaz.net • call 520-404-0031 \nSuggested donations \n$20 General  •  $15 for student/teacher/artist/military \n  \nThis theatrical piece is a collaboration with the University of Arizona Confluence Center for Creative\nInquiry’s Fronteridades program\, which elevates historically overlooked narratives to form a more\ninclusive\, accurate\, and just portrayal of the communities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

SUMMARY:18th Annual Día de Los Muertos Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:We will meet at the Global Justice Center 225 E 26th St at 5:00pm to begin walking to El Tiradito at 5:15pm. \nFor those who can’t join us on the walk please feel free to meet us at El Tiradito at 6:00pm. \nEvery year hundreds of people are being systematically “disappeared” at the U.S.-Mexico Border—as much by U.S. policies as by individual state actors. To honor each of our brothers and sisters that lost their lives in the desert here in Arizona\, each year Derechos Humanos organizes a pilgrimage on the Day of the Dead and carries one cross for each of the recovered remains\, whether identified or not. \nContact: Email: Coalicion@derechoshumanosaz.net\nPhone: 520.770.1373

SUMMARY:EVICT ICE : ICE out of Pima County Jail
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Saturday to demand Sheriff Napier to evict ICE from the jail and end any collaboration with ICE. \nSheriff Mark Napier has allowed ICE to have an office inside the jail since May of 2017 to facilitate the deportation of immigrants. Sheriff Napier is carrying out Trump’s agenda to further criminalize our immigrant communities and dehumanize them. \nTucson community groups are joining the national call to abolish ICE\, Immigration and Customs Enforcement\, by demanding that Sheriff Napier kick ICE out of the Pima County Jail. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department complies with ICE detainers on undocumented individuals in custody. When ICE places a hold on an individual\, this means the Pima County Sheriff’s Department will extend the detention of that individual for ICE to arrive and detain that person. In May of 2017\, Sheriff Napier granted an office to ICE representatives inside the jail to facilitate the transfer of undocumented individuals into ICE custody. In these ways\, Pima County is complicit with ICE and the racist border enforcement policies of the United States under the Trump administration. \nJoin us at 1pm at Vista Del Pueblo Park (1875 W San Marcos Blvd\, Tucson\, AZ 85713) for a rally with speeches and we start march towards Pima County Jail and gather there for more speakers and chants. \nBring water\, sunblock\, umbrellas\, and all the energy for a (1) mile farch full of art and good energy. \nBanner and poster making party this Thursday August 23 at the Global Justice Center from 6:30-10:00pm

SUMMARY:The Disappeared Art Project Public Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Disappeared Art Project is an effort to bring attention to the crisis of death and disappearance in the borderlands. La Coalición de Derechos Humanos partnered with No More Deaths to document the ways that border enforcement agencies disappear border crossers on a daily basis in the series of reports: The Disappeared: How U.S. Enforcement Agencies are Fueling a Missing Persons Crisis. This art project is in conjunction with the Disappeared reports as a public mode of communication and connection between the crisis and the public. Nogales-based artist Guadalupe Serrano Quiñonez of Taller Yonke has partnered with La Coalición de Derechos Humanos to create ten life-size figures that depict migration and disappearance. \nThe art pieces are displayed at the following locations until June 13th\, 2018: Pima Community College Downtown and Desert Vista Campus\, The Historic Y\, Borderlands Brewing\, La Pilita\, YWCA\, House of Neighborly Services\, and Fortín de Las Flores. \n \nThank you to Arizona Commission on the Arts\, Split Seed Productions\, Borderlinks and community members for providing funding for this public art exhibition. \n    \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emergency Rally Against Governor Ducey’s Decision to Put National Guard on the Border
DESCRIPTION:Join us to protest President Trump’s decision to send “2000-4000” troops to the border and Governor Ducey’s order to immediately send members of the Arizona National Guard. Further militarization of the border can only put more lives in danger. We demand that the National Guardsmen do not carry lethal weapons and that they be returned to their families and civilian occupations. We cannot allow Governor Ducey to play cruel politics and praise Mexican spending in Arizona\, while furthering lies of the Trump administration by placing more deadly policies on our border. \n\nWe look forward to your support on Thursday. Bring your family\, friends\, and co-workers. Publicize widely.

SUMMARY:Disappeared Art Project
DESCRIPTION:The Disappeared Art Project is an effort to bring attention to the crisis of death and disappearance in the borderlands. La Coalición de Derechos Humanos partnered with No More Deaths to document the ways that border enforcement agencies disappear border crossers on a daily basis in the series of reports: The Disappeared: How U.S. Enforcement Agencies are Fueling a Missing Persons Crisis. This art project is in conjunction with the Disappeared reports as a public mode of communication and connection between the crisis and the public. Nogales-based artist Guadalupe Serrano Quiñonez of Taller Yonke is partnering with La Coalición de Derechos Humanos and No More Deaths to create ten life-size figures that depict migration and disappearance. The figures will be exhibited in Nogales\, Sonora and then placed in various locations throughout Tucson\, estimated by April 2017. Each figure will include information and the website for the Disappeared report series. \nThis project relies solely on individual donations and a small grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Please consider donating to support the cost of materials\, artist’s compensation\, and transportation of the art pieces.

SUMMARY:End Operation Stonegarden!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the next Pima County Supervisors meeting to demand a permanent END to Operation Stonegarden! \nThe Pima County Board of Supervisors has already voted 3-2 to reject Operation Stonegarden funds offered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security so that the Trump administration could rope Pima County sheriff deputies into immigration enforcement operations. \nNow\, Supervisor Ramón Valadez has called for a new vote on the issue. He said he will agree to accept the funding\, putting Pima County residents at risk. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office\, which gets to keep some of the money to pad their budget\, is lobbying Valadez hard. \nPlease take a stand and tell Valadez you do not want the Pima County Sheriff’s Office mixed up with Trump’s deportation force. \nWe need to make sure that vote stands! \nAs we know from the racist legacy of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio\, mixing immigration enforcement with policing is a recipe for racial and ethnic profiling. Once these funds are accepted\, federal officials use local law enforcement officers to stop people for minor traffic violations so that Border Patrol agents can question them about their immigration status. \nYour messages will help convince Supervisor Valadez to vote no a second time. We need him to help stop the militarization of the border\, protect the civil liberties of all Arizonans\, and maintain local communities’ trust in law enforcement. \nThere will be a call to the audience where attendees will have 3 minutes to speak. If interested\, talking points can be provided for you. We have requested a Spanish/English interpreter for those who need it. Border Patrol and Sheriff deputies are expected to be in attendance during this meeting therefore if a person doesn’t have immigration status we are encouraging precaution. Folks can also show support and have their voice heard by calling or emailing the Board of Supervisors. \nWe need as many people there as we can fit. Please plan to join us at 9 AM sharp. \nCall 520-724-8126 during regular business hours and ask for Ramon Valadez’s office or email: District2@pima.gov or Ramon.Valadez@pima.gov
